Prof. V.P. Dimri

Professor Vijay Prasad Dimri served as the Director of the NGRI from October 2001 to February 2010. He is former President of 36th International Geological Congress. He was Distinguished Scientist of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research working at NGRI, Hyderabad, India for 3 years (2010-2013) and INSA Senior Scientist for 3 years (2013-2016). Professor Dimri was Dr. Homi Bhabha Chair Professor at Central University of Hyderabad from Nov 2016 till he was appointed President, 36th IGC. Also, he served as the Director, Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India from March 2010 to October, 2010.

He joined NGRI in 1970 as a research fellow after graduating from IIT-ISM, Dhanbad. Professor Dimri has more than 150 research publications in referred journals. He has authored three books entitled “Deconvolution and Inverse Theory (1992)” and 'Fractal Models in Exploration Geophysics (July, 2012)” both by Elsevier. Also, he has edited eight books (published by Springer, Balkema, Taylor and Francis and others) and a monograph of American Geophysical Union. He has produced nine PhDs.

Following are some important national/international recognitions bestowed on him:

Prof. Dimri has been conferred with the highest civilian award 'Padma Shri' by the Govt. of India in 2010. He delivered prestigious 'Axford Lecture' in Asia Oceania Geosciences Society and in the same year the other Axford lecture was delivered by the Nobel laureate Prof. Lee of Taiwan. Prof. Dimri is first Asian to get Lorenz Award Lecture by American Geophysical Union in the field of non-linear geophysics. Among many other important awards conferred on him includes, Prof. G.P. Chatterjee award by Indian Science Congress, Outstanding Scientist Award by FAPCCI, Department of Ocean Development Award, National Mineral Award and National Geoscience Award by MoES. Prof Dimri has delivered Prof. K. Naha memorial medal lecture-2016, awarded by INSA, New Delhi. The R.C. Mishra Life Time Achievement award was conferred to him in 2019. He has been listed among 100 great IITians in a book edited by comm. V.K. Jaitly. Recently Prof. Dimri is bestowed with Christiaan Huygens medal - 2026 by European Geosciences Union.

He is a Fellow of many learned academies and societies among which few are: The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Indian National Science Academy (INSA), National Academy of Sciences (NASI), Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences, Geological Society of India, and Honorary life fellow of Indian Society of Applied Geochemists. He was past President of Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences, Indian Geophysical Union and Association of Exploration Geophysicists, India.
