CSIR-NGRI plays a vital role in creating trained human resources with emphasis on Geology and Geophysics. It serves as a sound foundation for helping post-graduate students of various Indian Universities/Institutes to develop their professional skills, knowledge, and abilities. Over 100 post-graduate students are being trained every year as Summer/Winter Interns.

Post-graduate students in their second year / last semester, studying Geophysics, Geology, Earth Sciences are eligible to apply. Online application on the CSIR-NGRI website opens each year in January for the Summer Internships and in October for the Winter Internships. Selection is based on a combination of requirements and positions available with scientists of the Institute. A certificate is awarded to each student on the successful completion of their Internship and submission of their Report.

In summer the first slot spreads over May - June, while the next over July - August. In winter there is only one slot, during December - January. Selected candidates have to stay for a minimum period of 6 weeks and a maximum period of 8 weeks in each phase. Overlaps/ extensions are not permitted.

Shared accommodation at nominal rate may be provided, if available.
