The study images the mantle transition zone beneath the Eastern Indian Craton using P receiver functions from 16 seismic stations (Fig1a). It finds that the 410 km and 660 km discontinuities lie close to global cratonic averages, but the transition zone is slightly thin (Figs. 1b-c). The data also suggest a low-velocity layer above and below these boundaries (Figs. 1b-c), possibly linked to retained water or ancient subducted material. These results reveal a complex and dynamic deep mantle beneath this ancient craton.
