The geometry of the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) and heterogeneities of the underlying crust play a vital role in the seismogenesis of the Himalaya. This magnetotelluric (MT) study presents the crustal structure along a 210 km long profile in the eastern Kumaun Himalaya and adjoining Foreland Ganga basin. The results obtained by three-dimensional (3D) inversion of MT data reveal the presence of a wide and thick high conductivity zone beneath the Askot klippe and Chiplakot Crystalline Belt south of the Main Central Thrust (MCT) zone. Unlike the Garhwal Himalaya, where the ramp and the electrical conductor are located beneath the MCT, here the conductor is located south of the Munsiari Thrust.

Elevation and Bouguer gravity anomaly (BGA) along the profile are also shown (right top panel). For details of the abbreviations, please see the original publication.
