Professor V. P. Dimri - Christiaan Huygens Medal 2026

Vijay Prasad Dimri has been honoured with the 2026 Christiaan Huygens Medal for his remarkable contributions to exploration geophysics, especially in understanding the scaling behaviour of potential fields generated by scaling sources.

Dimri is internationally recognised for introducing fractal and scaling concepts into the study of Earth's gravity and magnetic fields. His pioneering work combined rock density and magnetization models with geopotential theory, leading to important advances in the interpretation of geophysical data. These methods have been successfully applied in mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, CO₂ sequestration, enhanced oil recovery, and climate-related studies.

He also made significant contributions in signal processing and developed innovative techniques for improving the identification and interpretation of geophysical anomalies. His research findings and methodologies are widely documented in several influential books, including Deconvolution and Inverse Theory. Among his notable achievements is the development of a new approach for estimating the depth of magnetic sources and modelling complex geological structures using Voronoi tessellation and fractal concepts, which resulted in a US patent in 2007.

Dimri has received several international honours, including the Oxford Lecturer recognition of Asia Oceania Geosciences Society and Fellowship of The World Academy of Sciences. As Director of CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute, he provided visionary leadership and strongly promoted interdisciplinary and international scientific collaboration while mentoring many young researchers
