Research Area

Dr. K. Naganjaneyulu (KN) has an M.Sc. (Tech) and a Ph.D. degree in Geophysics. He is a Principal Scientist (since 2018) at the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad. Dr KN specializes in modelling and inversion of magnetotelluric and gravity data from complex terrains. His current interests include determining the thickness of lithosphere and density structures of various terrains of India. He is involved in the major magnetotelluric projects carried out in the Indian shield region for 1) hydrocarbon exploration, 2) geothermal exploration 3) seismo-tectonic studies, 4) deep crustal and 5) lithospheric studies.  Dr. KN has hands on experience in operating various equipment and in modelling and interpretation of various data sets/methods like MT, gravity, resistivity and magnetic.  Dr. KN has worked extensively on the crustal architecture of the southern granulite terrain and Dharwar craton.

His work has provided new and integrated geophysical models for the Palghat-Cauvery suture zone, the most significant one being the confirmation that the PCSZ to be the trace of a major suture zone, and correlate with a plate tectonic model of subduction–collision–accretion tectonics along this zone related to the final amalgamation of the Gondwana supercontinent. He (along with Prof. M. Santosh) was the first to propose a double-sided subduction history along the central Indian tectonic zone.

Currently he is guiding 2 Ph.D. students and another 4 Ph.D. degrees were already awarded. Dr KN has about 75 published papers, reports and conference presentations to his credit. Dr KN is a recipient of the BOYSCOST fellowship. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Becas MAEC-AECID fellowship of Spain. He served as a member in several important committees in CSIR-NGRI. He is a reviewer for several prestigious journals like Gondwana Research, Journal of Asian Earth Sciences, Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, Ore Geology Reviews. He was a Guest Editor for a special issue on ‘Geophysical signatures of Precambrian shields and suture zones’ in the ‘Geoscience Frontiers’ journal.
