PadmaShri Dr. Vijay Prasad Dimri stands distinguished among the top 100 great IITans dedicated to the service of our nation. Commander V. K Jaitly, an esteemed alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, meticulously compiled the inspiring stories of these exemplary individuals. These IITians have exemplified patriotism by either staying in India or returning from abroad to contribute to our nation across diverse domains such as Academics, Industry, R&D, Defence, and more.
Dr. Dimri earned his M.Sc. Tech degree in Applied Geophysics and PhD from IIT (ISM), Dhanbad, and subsequently made significant contributions during his tenure at CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), where he served as Director from 2001 to 2010. His leadership at GERMI, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, and as a CSIR-Distinguished Scientist in Hyderabad underscored his commitment to advancing geosciences.
Under Dr. Dimri's stewardship, CSIR-NGRI achieved international acclaim for its research in geosciences, marking a milestone with its first US Patent. He spearheaded groundbreaking scientific initiatives in Ocean Studies, Energy Security, and Water Security, and Risk Assessment. Notably, his expertise in marine geophysics led to pioneering national programs in Gas Hydrates and Legal Continental Shelf, alongside collaborative projects like enhancing oil recovery in Indian wells with Norwegian scientists.
 
 
Dr. Dimri's impact extends to grassroots initiatives, exemplified by his successful project in Nalgonda district for managing groundwater and ensuring fluoride-free water supply. His outstanding contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious PadmaShri award in 2010 and the first-ever Lorenz Award from the American Geophysical Union in Asia. His recognition further includes the Axford Lecture Award and other national honors, reflecting his enduring commitment to scientific excellence and service to the nation.
